No Fireplace? No Problem!

Matt and I are living in a little townhouse, and we wanted a fireplace in the living room with the Christmas tree. Therefore, may I present to you, our DIY Fireplace!
First, you should see what our living room looked like before. Definitely no fireplace:
And below, our Christmas room!
The "fireplace" is simply a painted canvas with a thin board nailed to the top. We placed a small bracket beneath the board for some stability.
We threw on some lit candles and light decorations, and voila! Add a space heater next to the couch, and you almost can't even tell the difference!
(After thanking Matthew for his help, he sweetly replied, "Baby, I hope to help you with this kind of crap for the next 80 years!")

Does anyone else have some fun fireplace solutions?

  1. This is genius. I have been racking my brain for ways to "fake" a fireplace. My husband said he would do this for me. Only things we can't figure out... How is staying against the wall? and What is the board on top made of? Thanks!!

  2. It's a thicker piece of foam, almost like cardboard, left over from a framing project--any thin board will do (it is very light, so I have light objects on it balanced in the center).

We nailed the board to the canvas with just three nails, which will keep it up all by itself. For a bit of stability, we have a small L-shaped bracket between the board and the wall.

I'm so glad you liked it!

  4. Such a lovely idea. When I was little I wanted a fireplace, so I drew one with crayolas and tacked in on the wall above my bed. This totally reminded me of that forgotten Christmas memory.

  8. Eeeeek! The fire place is so magical! The closest I've gotten to making one was out of paper in my classroom. I just love yours and how cozy it is!
