Things to do to a T-Shirt

I had some scraps leftover after making my necklace, so I decided to continue playing with accessories. In this case, flowered hair barrettes. I like them because they are so versatile!

Things you'll need: Fabric scraps (cut into circles), small piece of felt, alligator clips, glue gun.

What to do: Fold & glue the fabric into a cone, the start adding more circles, gluing at the base to keep the petal shape you like.

When you've made your flower, glue the alligator clip between the felt and the flower.

Voila! I love this craft because it's such an easy way to accessorize your hair. The more flowers you add, the more dramatic the look. Use bigger circles, bright colors, make a wreath!

Things to do to a T-Shirt: Mardi Gras

I've been remixing my wardrobe, which means I'm recycling out old clothes to make room for new ones. This has made me realize a few things:

1. I had...let's call it bold tastes in fashion when I was in high school.
2. This means I have exciting fabrics to create things out of.

So for this installation of Things to do to a T-Shirt, let's talk about making a wreath.

This is a super easy--and cheap--project. I picked up a 99¢ cardboard wreath form from the craft store, cut strips of fabric out of the shirt, and glued it on there with my new-favorite-toy (the glue gun).

I like minimal wreaths, so I just added a silly mask and some beads and pop! Mardi Gras decor for pennies. It was a quick project that I finished whilst skyping with my dear friend, Jess.

Tutorial Tuesday: Things to do to a T-Shirt II

This week  I had fun making myself a new necklace out of an old t-shirt (hello, Project ReStyle!).

All you need are some cloth scraps, ribbon, a glue gun--and miss erika's awesome scrap flower tutorial. 

Make your flowers according to erika's easy step-by-step process and arrange them however you like. I wove in some black tulle to give it a little texture.

Glue two lengths of ribbon to the back of the flower arrangement--these should be as long as you'd like; they'll tie around the back of your neck. I used a fun velvet, but chunky satin would also be cool!

And voila! Easy new necklace (and more storage space in your closet!).

Tutorial Tuesday: Things to do to a T-Shirt

For this Tutorial Tuesday, I thought I'd show you the first of many DIY projects I'll be posting called "Things to do to a T-Shirt". This also falls nicely into the Project ReStyle category!

I thought I'd start out easy (for my sake more than yours!) by turning any t-shirt into a fun, disheveled scarf. 

All you need is a t-shirt and some scissors.

Step 1: Lay the t-shirt sideways and start cutting off strips. These can vary in size between one and two inches (or get creative and make them chunkier).

Step 2: Run your fingers across the strips, stretching the fabric and causing it to curl around itself.

 Step 3: Snip the loop to give yourself two ends.

Step 4: Keep going! I suggest keeping them a bit more organized than I did--this was a bit tangled by the time I was done!

Step 5: Start tying ends together to make super thin and long infinity loops. You can make one long one out of them all, or clump them in easier to manage bunches.

Step 6: Wrap them around at whatever lengths you like and enjoy your edgy self!
