What I Wore: Purple!

Recently, Elsie from A Beautiful Mess said to smile during outfit posts, and it got me thinking. I looked back and realized that I had fallen in the trap of not really smiling during outfit posts.

I know why. It's because I think my smile is a little uneven and a lot goofy. But you know what? I had so much fun smiling during this shoot--and I loved the (sometimes a little goofy!) results! So thank you for the tip, Miss Elsie!

Valentine's Day: Not just for lovers!

There are a lot of people out there who hate on Valentine's Day, calling it a hallmark holiday, or feeling overwhelmed by their lack-of-significant-other. Well it just shouldn't be so! Allow me to illustrate why, via Instagram:

True, I was able to sneak in some cuddle time with my lover, but it was during a nap because he had class all day. Was I going to let that get me down? Never!

My sisters and I had a date. Bonnie had us over for dinner and a movie (she had never seen Love Actually, can you believe it?), Forest brought cherry Moscato and amazing vegan Red Velvet cupcakes & cake pops (eeep!). My mom sent us each a matching love shirt, as well as puppy love in the form of Doodles Weaver, Bonnie's little chihuahua-werewolf mix.

I think the most touching part of the day was when my dad surprised me with a Valentine card made out to his daughter and son-in-law.

Think of Valentine's Day as an excuse to have frilly fun just for the sake of it! Dote on friends, family, pets, and yes, if you have them, lovers. Who cares if it's a "Hallmark Holiday"--it's a chance to celebrate!

Now, if you missed your chance, fear not, for today is the Feast of Lupercalia! Now go offer your libations to the gods and have fun!

I am addicted!

I seriously cannot stop eating this salad. Oh my word, the flavors are divine.

To make the salad, throw together a bowl of kale, chopped heart of palm, cherry tomatoes, chopped brussel sprouts, and nutritional yeast.

For the magical dressing, mix together some olive oil, minced garlic, dijon mustard, and lemon juice. Salt and pepper to taste.

It's sooo freaking good. The flavors are silly. Even Matt eats it (victory!!).

10 Dates Under 10 Dollars

Valentine's Day is coming up, but your date doesn't have to break the bank. Here are 10 great dates for under 10 bucks. Enjoy!

1. If you want to go out, do it during happy hour. You can get drinks, enjoy the bar scene, and enjoy each other. Do some research to find the best happy hour and have fun! Spend the rest of the night walking around your town, or cozying up together back at home.

2. Coffee shop dates are trendy for a reason--they are so fun! There is nothing like a warm drink on a cool night, and February is a perfect time. Plus you can look into great deals to add in cute pastries or even free drinks.

3. Don't underestimate how sexy it is to stay in, drink some wine, and cook with each other. Seeing the ingredients in your food is an amazing way to connect with what you eat, and preparing the meal with your date gives you time to bond. Nourish yourselves, and your relationship.

4. Pack a picnic! If it's cold, pack a thermos of hot chocolate with oversized cookies. You can even stay indoors by a fire, just lay a blanket out on the floor and have fun eating somewhere new. It makes for an easy transition to laying together, cuddling, star-gazing, or whatever else might strike your fancy.

5. Go to a used bookstore. There is something terribly romantic about tomes of books and making great discoveries. See what you can find for under $10. Bonus points for vintage Shakespeare sonnets, fairy tales, or love poems.

6. Indoors or outdoors, go ice skating! The two of you will get flushed cheeks, exhilaration, and peals of laughter. There is nothing like endorphins to boost a date! Finish up with hot chocolate at home.

7. Create art together. One of the first things Matt and I did with each other was to pick a theme that we each had to paint. Choose a quick-drying medium like watercolor or acrylic, set up your canvas or pages so you can't see each others' work (but so you CAN see each other), and set a time limit. You'll have fun seeing how you each interpret the theme, and then you have art AND a great memory!

8. Go to your local library, find a great (or terrible) film, and stay in to watch it! Make popcorn ala Elsie, get oversized candy, and your favorite sparkling drink. Be a teen again and make-out during the film. There's nothing like a great love story to get you feeling lovey-dovey!

9. Go dancing! It can be a night club, or to mix things up, find a local country bar or lindy groove. Swing dance and two-stepping are oh so very romantic--and a blast.

10. Stay in, light some candles, pour some champagne, and take turns pampering each other. Massages--whether full body or just feet and hands--are so divine and lend themselves to intimacy.

The bottom line is that you don't have to spend a lot of money to have a great date. All that matters is being with someone you are into. Have fun!

I've been feeling a little sad this winter. You see, Los Angeles has no winter. I find myself missing the snowy woods of Maryland, wearing fun scarves and coats, making warm drinks by a fire.

Then I decided to snap out of it, and make the most of this warm weather. That means bringing out fun skirts and dresses. This skirt might be my favorite.

5 Tips for Working from Home

It's been a challenging transition, going from a day job to working from home. Sometimes having all the time in the world worked against me; I would put off doing work because I had time to do it later...then I would get nothing accomplished. So I've put together a few tips that help me get work done:

1. Get Dressed for Work. Put on something nice and inspiring, just like you would for a fun day job. Trust me, you'll be more productive if you feel professional. I never get good work done if I'm in my PJs.

3. Have a Designated Workspace. Keep it clean and tidy, put up some inspiring artwork or quotes, and make it a lovely spot that you look forward to working in.

3. Keep a Schedule. Get into a routine so you know when it's time to work and when it's time to play. This will help keep you productive.

4. Take Breaks. Get up and stretch every hour, reward yourself with a snack break, or a tea break in the afternoon. I find this helps break up the hours, leaving me refreshed to keep at it!

5. Finish the Day. If you consistently work late into the night, you could burn out. Make sure you give yourself a closing time so you can relax at home, guilt-free. This is important! Just because you could be doing more work, doesn't mean you should.

What I Wore: Fancy Treehouse

Wow! So. I'm buried in boxes. Don't panic--every day there are less and less boxes. And soon we will even have internet! But seriously, moving is kind of a big deal. Don't let anyone tell you that moving isn't a big deal, okay?

I unpacked my clothes first. Yeah. Before silverware. That happened.

Moving out of the woods of Maryland into the city of Los Angeles has been a huge change. I mean, I used to take pictures of my outfits in the forest...now I take them in parking lots.

But more poignantly, it's the first time that Matt and I have been able to pursue creative ventures full time. He's finishing up his first week in film school, and I was just cast in a play here in Hollywood. Thank you to everyone who expressed their interest and support in my new career venture--per your request, I'll keep you updated.

Five Things

I love to mark the passing of time with goals. I think it's the military girl in me that responds really well to measuring change by looking back at a year and seeing what I've accomplished. That's probably why I keep an ongoing birthday year list, 28 Before 28, and also why I identify Five Things each year to focus on.

They are not exactly resolutions for the new year, but measurable goals I'd like to accomplish this year. Here are my Five Things for 2012:

1. Write my book. I admit that this has been really intimidating me. I worked on this all last year and did everything except actually write the book. It is outlined, the chapter summaries are prepared, and I write it in my brain every night. Time to face my fear and get that baby down on paper!

2. Hanumanasana (otherwise known as the splits). During my yoga retreat in Mexico, Kathryn Budig (yoga goddess!) suggested that we choose two huge poses a year to work on--just two! Last year was a great year for me physically, and I really developed my yoga practice. This year will be about deepening my practice and hopefully repairing some of the damage my body sustained during active duty.

3. Meditate. Every day.

4. Act. Did I tell you that I moved to Hollywood to act? It was such a huge shift for me to go from "I want to be an actor" to "I am an actor". I'm in Hollywood, I'm booking jobs, I'm an actor. I can't wait to make my dreams happen this year.

5. Create. I feel so happy when I'm creating things, whether it is blogging, art journaling, painting--or the endless other artistic callings I have. I want to prioritize this part of my life because it makes me happy.

Year in Review: 5 Tips to Analyze Your Work

2011 marks the end of my first full year of blogging. I decided to sit down and review Little Luck Tree as I would a business, and I thought I'd write down some tips so you can do the same.

I sat down with a notebook and my annual statistics, either from Google Analytics or Blogger. Then, I started to make lists:

1. Identify your most popular posts. This will show you what your readers enjoyed. Then you can begin to look at what made them popular: Was it the topic? The photography? Was it featured somewhere that allowed it to draw new readers? Did it have popular search terms attached to it?

2. List what worked for you this year. Did you advertise on other sites--and if so, how did your investment pay off? Did you connect with other bloggers in the community, via social networking, commenting on their blogs, exchanging guest posts, or reaching out to them personally? I realized that the best thing for me to do to draw readers is to provide good quality posts consistently--and reach out to other sites to promote my work.

3. Identify areas to improve. This is a very helpful practice. For me, I was able to recognize that I tend to be undisciplined with my blogging and my communication. I realized that it would be helpful for me to have a set time to blog and catch up on e-mail. I also need to accept how much time I can give to blogging so I don't fret when I don't finish a post. Finally, I realized that I should start to develop a style for my brand, something "that's so Luck Tree". Where do you need to improve? Photo quality? Communication? Consistent content?

4. List what you enjoyed. I believe fully that everyone should absolutely love what they do. How you spend your day is how you spend your life, and this includes blogging and business. You probably started because something inspired you, so knowing what you enjoy about what you do will help you focus on that inspiration and help reduce the less-than-ideal parts of the job. For me, I enjoy experimenting with crafts, fashion, recipes, graphic design...but I do not enjoy feeling pressured to make a blog post at the end of a project, so I'm going to work on my mind-set in the future. List what you enjoyed--then make a plan!

5. Create attainable goals for 2012. You should have a series of short-term (monthly) and long-term (annual) goals that you have listed, that you can refer to, and that you can focus your energy on. I tend to want to accomplish a lot or try so many different things that I get lost in my projects, so I am going to be more focused this year. I have very specific goals I want to attain and I am going to keep them handy so I won't get lost. Post your goals somewhere prominent--maybe in your workspace--and then refer to them often.

What I Wore: Skinny Jeans!!

Guess what I did? I bought a pair of skinny jeans!

This is a huge development. I've got some curves on me, so finding jeans has always been a challenge--I've never dared to even attempt skinny jeans.

But this year has been a transformation for me. I've developed a deep love affair with yoga, I went completely vegan, I began to meditate...and somewhere along the way, my body image has transformed too.

A few other things:
--Matt and I found a place in Hollywood!
--Our furniture isn't here yet.
--We sleep--with our cat--on a twin air mattress. Talk about cozy!

Brown Paper Packages Tied Up With String...

So has the flurry of the holidays hit you yet? Just remember, a few months ago you looked forward to this season--lights, parties, loved ones, warm drinks by the fire. Let go of anything that might be stressing you out and enjoy this special time of year.

And if you're like me and you've waited until the last minute to find/wrap your gifts, don't worry--here's a cute idea for last-minute gift wrapping: DIY Baker's Twine + brown paper bags (or magazines, craft paper, newspaper, anything lying around!).

What you'll need:
--White twine ($2 at a craft store)
--Sharpies in whatever color strikes your fancy
--Brown paper bags (anthro magazines, newspapers, leftover fabric or paper, doesn't matter!)
--Free printable gift tags
--Scissors, tape, junk mail

To make your Baker's Twine, just wrap the twine around an old junk mail envelope and color stripes on both sides. When you unravel it, it looks just like the real thing (but for a fraction of the cost!).

I love using upcycled materials for gift wrapping--it's great for the environment!

Make Your Pictures the Same Size in Blogger

Okay. I didn't feel like you guys enjoyed my first attempt at this tutorial. I mean, I want you to weep with joy at having finally found a way to make your pictures the same width in your (blogger) blog. So, in a much more concise fashion, here's how you do it:

Step 1. Insert your picture.

Step 2. Click on the picture, select "Original Size"

Step 3. Select "Edit HTML". Find the phrase <img and add the following code: width="465"

(Use whatever pixel width you want all your images to be, this might take some trial and error).

You're all done! Is that more helpful?

A New Kind of Engagement Photo

In my home, I like sentimental photographs that could also pass as fine art. I love my engagement ring not just because it happens to be exactly what I always dreamed of, but because of how special it is that Matthew devoted so much of his time picking out the perfect one. It also reminds me of the night he proposed, and it makes me feel so much love.

I took these photos of my ring in Italy after he proposed. I love the contrasting texture of the diamond and metal against nature: plants, wood, rocks. I think that these photos are beautiful by themselves, but blown up in my home, would make meaningful art.

I had so much fun making this crafty advent calendar with my sister. So cute and easy! I just used this origami box tutorial and voila!

Wouldn't it be cute as a garland or on a wreath? Inside each box is a fun activity for us to do as a family. The activity for today? Make stockings for our furry friends!

Hello, dear friends. I am back in America, though not quite back home. I've had a beautiful, love-filled weekend with my Yoga Teacher Training family. We graduated Friday night (yay! I'm a registered yoga teacher!) then spent the weekend with our teachers and their teacher, John Friend.

So here are some Instagram shots from my first week in Mexico (28 Before 28, woo woo!).

I'm here for Kathryn Budig's Poses for Paws Yoga Retreat, an amazing opportunity for me to center myself, work on my practice, and help save animals at the same time. If you're not familiar with the program, Poses for Paws donates money to organizations that help animals.

This year, the funds go to the Beagle Freedom Project, which helps rescue beagles after they've been used for animal experimentation (another reminder to choose cruelty free products, my friends).

As Thanksgiving approaches, it's a great time of year to reflect on what you're thankful for, and maybe find some time to give back to the community, whether it's for animals, the environment, or people in need.

Spinach Artichoke Dip

Confession: sometimes I just like to whip this up for myself and eat it.

All of it.

It's so easy and so not bad for you!!

Ingredients:
10 ounces (one bag) spinach
1 tablespoon olive oil
14.5 ounces (one can) artichoke hearts
2 tablespoons vegan mayonnaise
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1-2 teaspoons hot sauce
1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
Salt & Pepper to taste

Directions:
1. In frying pan, heat oil over med-high heat. Add spinach. Sauté until slightly wilted (3-5 minutes).

2. Put spinach and the rest of the ingredients into food processor or blender. Pulse until desired creaminess. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Yields about 2 cups of dip. I suggest serving it with chips or toasted bread. If you're feeling really fancy (Thanksgiving appetizers anyone?), serve with breadsticks and oil-cured olives. Yum!

And since there is no cheese or mayonnaise, it's super low in fat--but still delicious! Another win for vegan cuisine!

Vegan Pumpkin Recipe

Happy Early Halloween everybody! I am so very happy that Shannon is letting me share one of my favorite pumpkin recipes - Vegan Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins! Trust me, they are fabulous!

I make these muffins all of the time. They are my go-to breakfast treat, but I especially love them around Halloween and the fall. Also, it doesn't hurt that they are so easy to make.

This recipe is a modified version of Isa Chandra Moskowitz's "The Best Pumpkin Muffins" which can be found in her cookbook Vegan with a Vengeance. She is a wizard in the kitchen! I hope that you enjoy these punkin treats as much as I do. They would be ideal for a work function or a fall brunch.

What you will need:

Dry Ingredients

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/4 cups sugar (make sure the sugar is vegan)

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Wet Ingredients

1 cup pureed pumpkin

1/2 cup soy or coconut milk

1/2 cup vegetable or sunflower oil

2 tablespoons molasses

2/3 or 1 cup vegan chocolate chips, your preference (not pictured)

Preheat oven to 400 degree F. Lightly grease a twelve-muffin tin, or as I did, you can use fun, festive Halloween inspired tin liners. I spray them with oil to make sure I get the entire muffin out. I’m greedy like that.

Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and spices. In a separate bowl, whisk together pumpkin, soy or coconut milk, oil, and molasses. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry, mix, add the chocolate chips, and then stir until they are incorporated throughout.

Fill the muffin cups two-thirds full.

Bake for 17-20 minutes, until a toothpick or knife inserted in the center comes out clean. (Watch your muffins because you don't want to end up like me. I let mine brown a little too much.)

Voila! Happy Eating and Trick or Treating!

Delicious Pumpkin Pancakes

I love pumpkin pancakes this time of year. They are so easy to make--and the beauty is that the pumpkin is what makes them vegan--use it as an egg substitute for delicious pancakes that are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

So here's what you do: your favorite pancake mix, but substitute 1/4 cup pumpkin for 1 egg. If the recipe calls for milk, use your favorite milk substitute (I like almond or coconut milk). Top these babies with some melted Earth Balance and a bit of Agave Nectar or Maple Syrup. Delicious!

Hair-Piece DIY

I did this tutorial for Paper & Sparrow's amazing Alfred Hitchcock Party. If you haven't checked out the party--go ahead and do so now. I'll wait!

This movie legit scared me when I was little--to this day I hit the deck when birds fly by, so I thought it was an appropriate piece! Plus it makes an easy accessory for Halloween! Enjoy!

Here's what you'll need:

--Old fabric straps, cut into strips (1-2 inches wide, 6-8 inches long)

--A barrett or hair clip of some sort

--A used avocado bag (lemons, potatoes, etc also work)

--Floral Stem Wire (I've got 26 gauge--use what you like)

--Birds! (I'm using silly little craft store birds, but you could do paper cut-outs or even sew your own!)

--Also helpful: scissors and a glue gun

Step 1: Make a flower rosette. This is done by wrapping the fabric strip around itself and glueing it down. I kept mine messy, and then wove another color into it. Finished it off by glueing it down on a third strip of fabric.

Step 2: Weave your wire through the rosette, glueing it at the bottom. Use as much wire for as many birds as you have.

Step 3: Glue the rosette to the strip of paper at the bottom of the avocado bag (cut the top of the avocado bag off). Then glue the avocado bag to the barrette.

Step 4: Place a dab of glue to the bottom of your bird and insert the wire.

You're done! I paired my with a 60s beehive and cat eye. This baby is a head-turner.

Autumn Punch from Dancers and Dreamers

Hi there Little Luck Tree readers! My name is Hanna from Dancers and Dreamers and I am sponsoring Shannon's blog this month. I love sharing yummy recipes (probably because I like eating so much), so I decided to show you this one for hot punch.

As everyone knows, autumn is the time for walks outside in the crisp and cold air (the kind that makes your cheeks go red). Ever since I can remember, on special occasions, we would snuggle up with some blankets and drink something hot like this punch to get warm again once we were back at home. It is also a great drink if you have some guests coming over because it makes your home smell so delicious (and it is super-easy, too!). Even children can drink it because it is alcohol-free.

Here's the recipe:

Ingredients: 1 litre grape juice, 1 litre blackcurrant juice, 1 apple, 2 oranges, sugar, cinnamon, cloves.

Chop the apple and one of the oranges into cubes. Mix the juice and the chopped fruits and flavor it with sugar, cinnamon and cloves (I added about five) to your liking. Squash the second orange and put the juice in with the other ingredients. Bring everything to a simmer (it doesn't have to boil!). Once it is hot, your punch is finished!

PS: You can also add some red wine if you want to, both versions taste delicious. Cheers!

Harvest Halloween Wreath DIY

Today I am excited to share a guest post from Messy over at 2MESSY--and it's a fun one! Enjoy!

Hi Everyone!!! I am uber excited to be here at Little Luck Tree with my Harvest Halloween Wreath DIY for you all!!!

I adore having a wreath on my door...I just think it makes a home look so put together...even if it isn't. LOL

What You'll Need:

~ raffia wreath or foam wreath of any size
~ sewing pins
~ faux or silk autumn leaf garland
~ bunches of fake gourds, berries or pumpkins
~ Halloween ribbon with wire edging
~ Halloween garland, mini skeletons (optional)
~ fun Halloween sign or saying

STEP 1: Start with your wreath and wrap your leaves and berries (or whatever you have) that is in garland form around your wreath base. Tuck the ends in the back where the with pins or tucking like I did. {HINT: If you have an area where there is a open spot use a pin to force a leave to cover it!}

STEP 2: Stick your clusters of faux gourds and pumpkins through the base and bend the ends in back if too long.

STEP 3: Tie a bow out of your Halloween ribbon around the bottom of your wreath. I left longer ends, cut them in peaks and used the wire to make a wave effect.

STEP 4: Add your Halloween sign and skeletons or whatever you have to make it spooky!!! :) {Last year I added a little spider webs to be different}

STEP 5: Add a hanging ribbon and hang on your front door.

Hello friends! I've made it to sunny California--it is definitely not fall here! Temperatures in the 90s...crazy! Is that stopping me from going into the air conditioned Starbucks for my Tall Soy Two-Pump Pumpkin Spice Latte? No. Not in the slightest.

Tutorial Tuesday: Silver Bullet Necklace DIY

Are you ready for the full moon tonight? Everyone knows that silver is your best bet if you want to defend yourself from a werewolf. Best to be prepared. Fear not! I'm here to help.

Here's what you'll need:
--Non-lethal bullet (these come prepped for you at any Army Surplus store--complete with a hole pierced through the shell or a ring adhered to the top, seen above)
--Rope/String (hemp would be cool--very werewolf slayer-esque)
--Necklace clasps (although a good ol' knot will do in a pinch)
--Model paint (may I suggest chrome or silver over gray?)
--Paintbrush

Step 1: Paint your bullet. Let it dry, then scratch some of the paint off.
Step 2: Wrap your rope around the bullet however you like, then string remaining rope through loop (note, I used two strands because I liked how it looked)
Step 3: Fix your necklace clasps to the ends.
Step 4: Tighten (I used pliers, but that may have been overkill...)

Voila--you're ready should you come face to face with a bonified werewolf! Plus it just looks kind of cool, don't you think?

Here's a little lore for you:
--Werewolf mythology dates back to Ancient Greeks
--Traditionally, werewolves were created from the bite of another wolf--or a curse
--Full moons have been associated with temporary insanity (hence the term lunatic) and other magical incidents (you know, like becoming a werewolf)
--The October full moon is known as the Harvest Moon, or the Hunter's Moon

Creatures of the Night: PT I

Let's talk about bats. They are arriving in Halloween cards, flying around on streamers, and maybe even bringing you candy. The real creatures often get a bad rap, but they are possibly my favorite environmental contributor: they eat bugs!!!

These little flying friends can eat up to 1200 mosquitos in an hour! They also help control other pests like moths, beetles, and leafhoppers, but environmental pressures are threatening their populations. You can help out by putting up a bat house!

Those are cute little nest boxes that you can put up on your house (shown above under my dad's rafter); they are nice and discreet, and super helpful for your eco-system. You can find them for purchase on Amazon--bonus: kids will love putting this up!

Vampire Bite Necklace DIY

I think it's fun to wear subtle Halloween pieces throughout the month. This is a simple DIY for vampire bite necklace, you know, if you're into that kind of thing.*

Step 1: Slip the head pin through the bead.
Step 2: Insert the head pin through a link of the necklace.
Step 3: Measure where you'll want both beads to go.
Step 4: Using the pliers, bend the head pin to weave it through at least two links, three if possible.
Step 5: Curl the remaining head pin length into a circle, with the end pointing toward the bead (away from the neck).
Step 6: Complete with second bead. All done!

Vegan Candy

Halloween starts a tricky season for vegans--candy, baked goods, Thanksgiving dinner....very animal-filled. But with a little planning and research, you too can be cruelty-free this holiday season! To start, here are some popular vegan candies. Trick or treat with them, put them in jars for a spooky table setting, or just enjoy as a sweet treat from time to time.

Now, I'm not saying these are filled with particularly nutritious content, but at least they don't have cow hooves or pig stomach in them. Check out a larger list--which includes chocolate!--here.

Oh, and Oreos and Nutter Butters are also vegan. Just sayin'.

Halloween Wreath DIY

Happy October!

I'm amped, I don't know about you guys. I am starting out the season with a spooky wreath. Bonus: everything was thrifted--that's right, friends, it's time for a long overdue Project Restyle!

Here's what I used:
--Thrifted foam wreath
--Thrifted black garment
--Creature of the night
--Scissors

Step 1: Shred the garment. This can be totally messy!

Step 2: Start tying the shreds in knots around the wreath.

Keep the knots messy--almost mummy-esque.

Step 3: Add your creature of the night--bats, spiders, ravens, anything you like. I prefer haunted mansion-type decorations for Halloween, and not so much the gore themed decorations.

Step 4: Loop an extra piece of shredded fabric around the wreath and hang that baby! Enjoy!

Hi all lovely Little Luck Tree readers, my name is Frankie and I currently live in London, UK. Outside from my day job in the City, I run an Etsy shop, Funtime Frocks Etc. selling vintage clothes, accessories and sewing patterns. I am also known as a Bird, as my blog As the Bird flies suggests. This is my travel blog to document an up and coming trip with my boyfriend. We're packing up our London lives next month to fly to south east Asia, Australia and New Zealand to chase the sun and experience new adventures.

Two of the hardest things about planning this trip has been reducing my personal belongings by more than half and secondly, I am dreading saying goodbye to my nearest and dearest. However, as I sorted my clothes into "charity shop" (thrift store), "storage" and "going travelling" piles I couldn't commit a couple of items to any of these piles because they were damaged yet had a lot of sentimental value because I'd worn and loved them so much. These included some crazy (but awesome!) animal print pyjamas I picked up for $2 in a thrift store in Seattle (yes really!), my most favourite shirt check shirt (again thrifted once upon a time) and a pretty flowery summer top. I've worn each item so much over the years there are holes and tears to the material. Because I've worn them so much I know that they will be instantly familiar and "very Frankie" to my friends and family so I decided to reuse them to make special "good-bye cards".

Here's what you need to make these very quick and easy cards:

Much-loved but worn out material!

Old card to cut up (I used some old stationary but a cereal box would be perfect too)

"Posh" card for the cards (I chose bright colours that again I wear a lot so they're recognisable as "me")

Enveloppes

Fabric glue (I used 3M Craft Mount spray glue as it's so quick and easy to use)

Paper clips and fabric pins

"Pinking" scissors

Normal scissors

Pencil for drawing and marking
Glitter, scrapbook masking tape or other fun things to stick on your card (optional)

1. Pick a design to made of your fabric. The idea is to make this personal, so maybe pick your favourite, shape, animal or flower. I am always signing off cards and notes with a little love heart so I chose to draw and cut out hearts for my card design. Cut out a template of your shape on card using the normal scissors.

2. Cut out in fabric. Use the card shape as a template on fabric to cut around. You may need to pin the card on to fabric so that it stays put. I used pinking scissors because they tend to cut the fabric in a way which means it doesn't fray too much, alternatively you could hem the shape.

3. Cut out a few fabrics & sizes. Layers are fun!

4. Stick to card. It's that simple! Mark out where you want your shape and using fabric glue or special craft glue stick the fabric onto the card.

5. Layer! Add other layers or some glitter to jazz your cards up!

Done! I chose to write some of the lyrics from my favourite songs, or little messages that mean something to my friends, this makes the card personal and unique.

Write your message and seal with a loving kiss!

I hope that these cards will be lovely little somethings to remember me by for my family when I'm away travelling and hope you've been inspired to try this sometime soon.

I've found lots of other ways to use up the rest of the material include making jam car covers, cute bows and ribbon for wrapping presents, and lastly bunting which I'm now making for our leaving party! Happy creating!

One Year Blogiversary!!!

My first blog post on Little Luck Tree was on the first day of fall last year. I was so young then, just a wee babe in the woods, trying to get by. My first post might look familiar if you've checked out my About Me section. Here's a peek:

I am a girl.

I have a Matt and a cat (Artemis!)*

I drink tea. Every day.

It took me hours. I spent so much time trying to figure out what I wanted to say, and how to use the camera and photoshop and blogger, and I was so nervous when I posted it!

*Here's a fun fact: any early pictures of Matt were ambiguous because we weren't allowed to be dating at the time!

I've learned a lot in one year of blogging, and I've "met" some really fun other bloggers and youtubers out there. Blogging has kept me motivated and inspired, which I've been so thankful for in my transition out of the military.

Mostly I just want to thank anyone who is reading this, and anyone who has visited Little Luck Tree. Your support and your comments mean so much to me and I couldn't do this without you!

Dreamy Pumpkin Smoothie

I love pumpkin, okay? I love pumpkin seeds, pumpkin pie, pumpkin spice...everything. And you know what? I don't feel bad about that, because pumpkin is so good for you: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, beta-carotene, potassium...oh so many delights. So you can have one of these and think of it as a healthy treat!

Ingredients:
1 cup coconut ice cream (look, you can use soy, but it's just not quite as good!)
1/4 cup pumpkin puree (perhaps more, if it pleases you)
1/4-1/2 cup coconut milk
1 TBS agave or maple syrup
1-2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Step 1: Blend ingredients, using as much coconut milk and spice as you like
Step 2: Drink and savor, my friends

It's like pumpkin pie in a cool, creamy cup. Feel free to top with roasted pecans or shredded coconut--this is a real treat for your tastebuds. Bonus: it's vegan--no animals were harmed in the making of this smoothie!

My Favorite Accessories for Fall

I have come to really love the changing of the seasons. In the fall, the air feels crisp, but not yet quite cold. The leaves change to brilliant earthy colors, and there is just nothing like the fruits and vegetables of autumn harvest.

I have also found that it is the perfect time of year to accessorize--you can layer up without being too hot or too cold! It's a fashion dream!

Know what I mean?

Some more things I have learned:
1. I seem to prefer to look off to the left in photographs. Hmm!
2. My mom and my sister also love fall accessories--they helped out with this photo shoot, and I easily have twice as many photos to choose from. You'll be seeing more from our adventures today!
3. When climbing ravines in a short skirt, proceed with caution!
